How does your employer's 401(k) match compare to the largest U.S. retailers?
I gathered data from public filings and company websites to build the comparison below.
Surprisingly, it was difficult to find and verify this information - especially the vesting schedules.
Some companies, like Walmart and Home Depot, are transparent about their 401(k) formulas and vesting schedules. Others? You’ll need to dig through SEC filings—or worse, incomplete third-party sites. Even then, some details like vesting schedules are missing or vague.

Why Does the 401(k) Match Matter?
If you are seeking an hourly wage retail job, you're likely considering a few of the major retailers that fill our towns and suburbs. It's difficult to compare what each compensation package offers as there is more than just hourly rate which tend to be similar in each market. You want to consider:
💰 401(k) Matching Contributions
🩺 Health Insurance
📈 Stock Purchase Plans
🏖️ PTO & Holidays
🎓 Tuition Support
🛍️ Store Discounts
If you’re choosing between retail employers, benefits like 401(k) contributions shouldn’t be an afterthought. They’re a key part of total compensation—and every dollar counts.
If I missed something or you have better source info, shoot me a DM and I’ll update the table. Let’s make this info easier for everyone to find.
