Walmart, J.B. Hunt and Tyson Foods all offer Deferred Compensation Plans, but not all plans are created equal. See how they stack up against each other in the table below!

Each has its strengths:

  • Walmart offers the highest employer match at 6%. Great for Building Wealth!

  • J.B. Hunt is the only one with quarterly installment payments. Great for Cash Flow Management!

  • Tyson allows you to pick a specific calendar year for distributions vs. payments automatically starting at separation. Great for Tax Planning!

Compares 401(k) match program at largest U.S. retailers.

Final Thoughts

Non-Qualified Deferred Compensation Plans can be a powerful tax saving and wealth building tool for high earners, but they are often misunderstood and (therefore) underutilized.

This is an incentive and communication issue.

Financial advisors have no financial incentive to help since they cannot charge an AUM fee or earn a commission. Company sponsors distribute plan materials but they're often high level and not personalized.

This confusion and complexity often result in eligible participants opting out of participating.

As the trend toward self-managing investments and retirement continues - exemplified in the move away from pension plans to 401(k) and NQDC plans - it's up to eligible employees to educate themselves and make smart, informed decisions.
